Students take part in cycle safety training

Year 7 students at The Birkenhead Park School have this morning taken part in a two-and-a-half hour Bikeability level 3 cycle training course.

Bikeability is provided as part of Merseyside’s TravelWise campaign - the new Cycling Proficiency for the 21st century. It’s designed to give the next generation the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on today's roads. Children are taught to ride a bike to National Standards and are introduced to cycling as a fun concept and everyday activity, and as an alternative, low cost mode of transport. Level 3 training enables children to ride on busy roads more safely and opens up their options for travel.

The scheme is government recognised and is underpinned by national standards to ensure the children are given the highest standards in the training.

 In fact, when officially polled, 92% of parents said they saw a significant increase in their child’s safety when cycling on the road after taking part in a Bikeability training course.

As well as learning safety skills, the course encourages the students to have fun whilst riding, so that they continue to benefit from using their bikes as a form of transport.
