Every child should feel that they belong, that they are known and that there is someone there when they need help.
At The Birkenhead Park School, care and support are at the heart of school life. We take time to understand each student as an individual and provide the right support to help them settle in, grow in confidence and succeed.
This was recognised by Ofsted, which found that “pupils are motivated by the impressive support that they receive from staff” and that pupils who face barriers to learning or wellbeing “get the support that they need.”
Supporting students from the very beginning
Moving from primary to secondary school is a big step. Our support starts before students arrive, with carefully planned transition arrangements and additional support where needed, particularly for students with special educational needs and/or disabilities.
We also recognise that some students, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, may face additional barriers to learning or wellbeing. We work to understand those barriers and put the right support in place to help every student thrive.
Each year group has a dedicated, full-time Year Leader. In Year 7, there is a particular focus on helping students settle in confidently, enjoy school and make a positive start to their secondary education.
A school where every child belongs
Our pastoral leaders work closely with teaching assistants, the SENCO, families and external professionals to make sure support is tailored to each student rather than taking a ‘one size fits all’ approach.
Ofsted recognised this as a particular strength of the school, finding that pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities “attend regularly, achieve well and feel that they belong in the school community.”
The result is a school where students know that people care about them. As Ofsted found, pupils “feel safe, supported and cared for in school which contributes to them wanting to be here.”
