Sixty of our Year 7 students spent three days at the outdoor pursuit centre, Colomendy, experiencing abseiling, gorge walking, raft building, caving, zip wire, Lazerzone and many other fun activities.

The trip provided our year 7 students the opportunity to develop their organisational skills, build their resilience and work as part of a team. The skills learnt will also help the students to achieve their PIXL Edge apprenticeship award.

The trip has been heavily subsidised by the school to ensure that cost wasn’t a barrier to the exciting trip. For those students that did not want to stay away from home at such a young age, our year 7 team ensured they could still take part by running day trips so they could meet up with their friends and teachers.

Helen Johnson, Deputy Headteacher said; “We wanted to get all of our year 7 students together for a residential involving working together to conquer challenges, learning how to recognise their strengths, as individuals and as a group, developing their teamwork skills and a can-do attitude.”

Colomendy opened in 1939 as a safe haven for Merseyside wartime evacuees, these days it is an outward bounds centre for thousands of schoolchildren each year who take part in activities such as rock climbing, archery and zip-wiring.

The School invests heavily in making sure the transition from Primary to Secondary education is as easy as possible for new students and this trip is part of this focus. Our ground breaking “Year 7 Base”, operates like a school within a school where students have their own playground, entrance and classrooms, easing their progression from a small to large school environment.

Mrs Johnson added; “With our Year 7 Base, summer school and an early insight to the fantastic school excursions we organise, our students quickly get to know their peers and start their secondary education with confidence. Over 40 students from The Birkenhead Park School will head to China soon as part of the schools twinning with Taicang Middle School. We want our students to widen their horizons and have the best opportunities.”
