Amidst all the World Cup fever we thought we’d bring football matters a little closer to home. For almost the past decade, our misfortunes at major international football tournaments have led to endless comparison with supposedly superior Spanish models, given the contrary success of their national side.

We sent two of our budding young professionals to test out this theory. Robert and Owen, from Year 7 & 8 respectively, attended a Real Madrid Football Roadshow at Woodchurch High School. They participated in exercises lead by the actual coaching staff of the ‘Galacticos’, focusing on nurturing ball mastery, passing, speed & movement and finishing – key skills that are ordinarily taught in training at Real Madrid.

They finished the day with a tournament followed by a presentation where all students received a certificate and Real Madrid pin badge.

School sports teacher Mr Gauntlett said: “It’s not every day you can say that you have been taught by coaches from such a famous football club. The boys did themselves proud and really enjoyed the day.”

Hopefully the real prize is that our boys have uncovered even a small piece of the Spanish secret.

Well done lads!
